To prevent wedge back-out, select the largest wedge that will fit the interproximal space. While holding the wand, bend the wedge head at an angle to facilitate placement. The less you bend the wedge head, the easier it will be to direct pressure into the interproximal space. Continue to hold the wand and place your index finger close to the wedge head. Use your index finger to apply force to the wedge head, inserting it into the interproximal space to the desired position. When proper placement has been achieved, twist the handle with your fingers and it should easily separate from the wedge head.

Correct wedge selection will supply proper seal and separation while helping to prevent the wedge from loosening or backing-out during the procedure. Select the largest wedge that will fit the interproximal space. The flexible, compressible material will allow a larger wedge to be adapted during placement than otherwise might be possible. Posterior:
- While holding the wand, bend the wedge head at an angle to facilitate placement. The less you bend the wedge head, the easier it will be to direct pressure into the interproximal space.
- Continue to hold the wand and place your index finger close to the wedge head.
- Use your index finger to apply force to the wedge head, inserting it into the interproximal space to the desired position.
Anterior:
- It is not necessary to bend the Wedge Wand for anterior placements.
Grasp the wand between your index finger and thumb close to the indentation between the wand and wedge head.
- Use your index finger and thumb to apply force to the wedge head, inserting it into the interproximal space to the desired position.
- Removal of the wand from the wedge is optional. Depending on the procedure, you may wish to leave the wand attached to the wedge head to easily remove the wedge when the procedure is complete.
- To remove the wand, simply twist the wand with your fingers and the wand will separate from the wedge head.
- You should be able to achieve correct placement of the wedge with the use of the wand. However, if you wish to drive the wedge further, after removing the wand, use a hemostat or sturdy cotton forceps to correct the placement. The back of the wedge is textured for a positive grip with these standard dental instruments.
- Removal of the wedge is easily accomplished with the wand if it was left attached. Or grasp the textured back of the wedge with any standard hemostat or cotton forceps.
